Parasitical or Processing?

I recently finished a series of which the content comprised mostly of women, in varying stages of pregnancy. For months my sister and friends were pregnant, and my love of the ocean, fish and sea creatures and new life seemed to pour out of my hands. That series has come to a close. And there is always a period where my brain just settles, sits back and looks at what I have accomplished and I wait. Sometimes I wait a long time. Sometimes not. I wait for the next series to present itself, because it always has.
This time however, my inspiration comes from a painful source and I draw reluctantly closer to it, with great interest and apprehension. To be truthful to myself, I have to follow through with it. But I wonder am I being parasitical or simply processing what I am experiencing? – or both? And need it matter? I don’t want to hurt anyone, the story must be told. And already my imagination is like a rampant vine, all over the idea, with tendrils every which way. And so tomorrow I will begin, after weeks of procrastination.
I will keep updating my albums on my Facebook Page: Clare Bryant and the dreamers beacon. Your insights are always welcome.

With less than 7 days left of my solo exhibition “Love and Breakfast,” I am still furiously working on new pieces as I am continually inspired by life around me.
Particularly of late the migration of the whales heading north, breaching and putting on a humbling display of power has inspired me to remain energetic right up to the last!
Psycho? Or Limbic-ally challenged?

Recently, after over two years of being treated by my psychiatrist, my Doctor said it was most likely that my ex-husband is a psychopath. I have been seperated and divorced now for years. I have a private number and I cannot tell you how relieved I felt. Of course, from a distance, and not having met him, she could not definitively diagnose this disorder. But she’s smart, and she knew enough.
It is a term bandied about too often in common conversation for it’s real meaning to be realised. Every guy that gives you the finger on the freeway, you think to yourself “Psycho.” And that person possibly is.
But my Doctor knows all about my ex, whom I now shall refer to as V (for vomit). Having told her my back story and history, I have allowed her to see V’s modus operandi. I could not reconcile all the traits and actions, until she said V was a psychopath. And researching psycopathy is very helpful. I find myself nodding, saying “Yes! Yes! Yes, that’s what he was like. I know that person. I lived with that person.”
Apparently pscopathy can be physiological,as well as a bit of nature/nurture going on. The limbic center of our brains controls some of our emotional responses. When most of us see another persons distress, our emotional centre, the limbic system, is aroused. We feel a little of what others are feeling.
But a 2001 US study revealed the psychopath has very little limbic system response to emotional information. Brain scans showed very different responses from psycopaths and non-psycopaths.
There are not for profit organisations designed to help those who are diagnosed with psycopathy. Having been at the pointy end of the stick, ironically, it is now my turn to feel no empathy. I did at first, when I left V three times. I felt so sorry for V, and V did too. But now, as I have memories come back as fallout and nightmares that I have to “rescript” (a suggestion from my Doctor), I find I do not have the emotional energy to even begin to feel empathy for a true blue psycho. And they don’t really need my empathy. To them it would be mentally converted into currency for themselves. They are survivors. As for children who are born psychopaths or develop into psychopaths, apparently with alot of love and help it may not be too late. The inability to love, feel a hint of what others may be feeling makes for a horrendous predator, even in a child. I don’t have the answers, just more questions. If you think you are living with or working for a psychopath, have a look at the following list. It is not designed to be a comprehensive checklist as to whether someone is or isn’t a psychopath, but it will definitely give you what may be a life saving Heads Up.
- superficial charm
- self-centered & self-important
- need for stimulation & prone to boredom
- deceptive behavior & lying
- conning & manipulative
- little remorse or guilt
- shallow emotional response
- callous with a lack of empathy
- living off others or predatory attitude
- poor self-control
- promiscuous sexual behavior
- early behavioral problems
- lack of realistic long term goals
- impulsive lifestyle
- irresponsible behavior
- blaming others for their actions
- short term relationships
- juvenile delinquency
- breaking parole or probation
- varied criminal activity
Ringing any bells? It did for me. I need to understand the monster that I lived with, so that I can reduce him to rubble.

I have an upcoming exhibition at Curious Art Co-operative gallery in March/April called ‘Love and Breakfast.’ It’s based upon a poem I wrote called ‘Breakfast in Beirut’ (which you can see among my pages), based on a spy thriller for which I feel an affinity. About the enormity of love surpassing many obstacles, the simple shared pleasures of domesticity in a world gone mad. Seems like all the different kinds of love there are we are fighting for in a warzone, even if the battleground is simply your mind.

Stumbled across this beauty on YOUTUBE Howcast (It’s 3:07 a.m. e.d.s.t and I can’t sleep.) I have to admit to the conga line at a recent party more than once (!), but the guy up front was wearing a fedora, so, you know, it was cool…
